The Niagara Migrant Workers Interest Group (NMWIG) was formed by representatives of not-for-profit community organizations. Together with our members, it's our mission to address the needs of migrant agricultural workers in the Niagara Region through the provision of services in health, safety, and language and education.
Who We Are
The Niagara Migrant Workers Interest Group (NMWIG) was formed on July 12, 2010, by representatives of Niagara-based not-for-profit community organizations. Our primary objective is to work collaboratively to address the needs of migrant agricultural workers in our Region. Our objective is to enhance the well-being of migrant workers in Niagara by facilitating access to essential services and information through collaborative partnerships with member agencies and community programs.
Challenges Faced by Migrant Workers
Every year, hundreds of temporary foreign farm workers come to the Niagara Region to work on farms and in greenhouses. Most arrive through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP), while others come through different streams of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. These workers are essential to Niagara’s fruit and vegetable industry, helping fill critical labour shortages with their farming knowledge.
While in Canada, migrant farm workers often work long hours, live in remote rural areas, and face language differences. These factors can make it challenging to access information, services, and supports. As a result, many workers have limited resources to address their health, social, and legal needs during their time in Canada.
